The study analyzed 42 laboratory investigations, assessing the impact of these methods on surface roughness and marginal integrity. Results indicate that both techniques can harm restorations, with ultrasonic instrumentation generally causing more damage than air polishing. The severity of the effect varies depending on the material used in the restoration, with resin-based composites being more vulnerable. The review suggests using less abrasive air polishing powders to minimize harm and highlights the need for further clinical studies.
