This research paper evaluated the performance of six different large language models (LLMs), including various versions of ChatGPT, Chatsonic, Copilot, and Gemini Advanced, in the field of restorative dentistry. The study assessed these AI chatbots for their accuracy in answering knowledge-based questions, their reliability and consistency in responses to patient-related and dentistry-specific inquiries, and the readability of their generated text. The findings indicated that performance varied significantly across the different LLMs, with some showing promise for academic and patient education, while others struggled with reliability, consistency, or produced text too complex for patient comprehension. Ultimately, the study highlights the potential and limitations of current AI chatbots in dentistry, emphasizing the need for careful consideration before their unsupervised use, especially in patient education.
